How to use Lattice Method to solve multiplication expresion?

Lattice method for 1-digit multiplier – Example: Use lattice method to multiply 3 x 45

Step 1

Lattice method multiplication examples worksheets & test: A lattice usually consists of two or more cells with diagonals. Write 4 and 5 above the cells of lattice. Write 3 on the right side.

Step 2

Multiply 3 x 5. Write the answer as shows.

Multiply 3 x 4 and write the answer as following:

Step 4

Starting at the right, add the numbers inside lattice along each diagonal. Read the answer starting on left side of lattice.

Lattice method for 2-digit multiplier – Example: Use lattice method to multiply 34 x 18

Step 1

This lattice multiplication needs 4 cells in all. After drawing the boxes and adding diagonals, write 18 above the cells of lattice. Write 34 on the right side of cells.

Step 2

2-1. Multiply 8 x 3, write the answer 2 and 4 in the corresponding latticed boxes as follow.

2-2. Then multiply 8 x 4, write 32 in the cells as shows.

2-3. Multiply 1 x 3, here the answer is 03. So you write 0 in the upper part of cell and 3 in the lower part as shows.

2-4. Then multiply 1 x 4 and write 04 in the corresponding cell parts.

Step 3

Starting at the right, add the numbers inside lattice along each diagonal. The sum of the numbers along the second diagonal is 4 + 3 + 4 = 11

Put down the 1 in the answer space and carry the 1 at the top of next diagonal to obtain 5 + 1 = 6.
